The Island of Boubyan

Boubyan is Kuwait's largest island. Located in the northeastern part of the country, the 1,400-square-kilometer island is separated from the mainland by the Subiya Channel. Long undeveloped due to its poor soil conditions, the government of Kuwait recently approved a multi-billion dollar plan to develop Boubyan Island into a commercial seaport to serve as the main gateway for Kuwait, Iraq and the surrounding region.

Boubyan Island is a large, uninhabited island on Kuwait's border with Iraq, in the environmentally sensitive headwaters of the Arabian Gulf. Kuwait's Ministry of Public Works commissioned a major planning effort to study the island's marine and land life and then determine a sustainable development strategy. In the year 2004 , the Consultants of the project , HOK and Gulf Consultants- JV, developed a master plan that recommends creating a new nature preserve on the island's northern half. The plan limits development across the rest of the island to small clusters strategically located to cause minimal environmental impact. These clusters include a new container port and free-trade zone, a lakefront community and a series of low-density resorts.
